That’d Be Hank

A musical biography by Jayne Russell that celebrates 100 years of country artist Hank Williams Senior. Album artwork, singles, and album packaging.

That’d Be Hank by Jayne Russell is a musical biography about famous 40s/50s country artist Hank Williams Senior. It was released in celebration of 100 years since his birth. Upbeat and emotional, the album is a journey through poignant scenes in his life. The songs are delivered in a mix of styles, each with its own unique sound such as country, folk, Tex-Mex, blues, square dance, and old jazz. The goal was to create something that feels celebratory and clear the project is about Hank – and not music by him.

A bold, clean typographic approach was taken to reflect the simple, direct writing style of both Jayne and Hank. The album cover is a nod to Hank’s career peak, referencing Nudie Suit embroidery and Honky Tonks where he played throughout his career. An energetic, 1950s-inspired colour palette was used. The mustard yellow creates a vintage vibe that feels moody yet upbeat, reflective of the album vibe and subject matter. The CD album packaging features archival imagery of Hank and his band along with a bold type treatment. It was printed in offset and the cd was silk screened for a high quality result.

Singles for all songs were created and released over several months, beginning on Hank’s 100th birthday: Sept 17, 2023 and ending with the album release on New Year’s day – the date of Hank’s death. A range of type styles used for cover artwork reference the varied song styles, inspired by wood type and the mixed type treatments commonly used in posters and print during Hank’s era.
